EINAT PELED - RAMAT GAN, ISRAEL
Untitled

what's the idea behind your piece?
When I was looking for a piece for this project I didn't have anything specific in mind. I went to the flea market in Jaffa to look for an interesting artwork, and after 2 hours of strolling I found this piece in a dusty pile of framed artworks. It immediately caught my eye, who would like to put this in their home?
I love dogs and the first thing that came to my mind was to draw a big tear on the dog, recently I'm more aware of stray dogs and cats and how much they suffer on the streets, other than that I was just having fun with it and going with my intuition.

what's your favorite thrift/antique/vintage store find?
Few years ago, I saw this in a flea market on 25th st. in NYC. I loved this strange combination that happened by chance and did a drawing if it.

what contemporary artists are you inspired by?
I'm inspired by art, by industrial design, by fashion and textile design and by interesting forms and colors in nature, many times i'm more inspired by interesting
textiles, clothes or mosaics than from fine art. I'm very moved every time that I see work by Picasso (ofcouse!), Gauguin, Romare Bearden and Saul Steinberg.

last piece of art acquired?
I usually don't buy art, but I love interesting objects, recently i've bought a handmade vase made of many many pieces of folded paper from a philipine woman who works in Israel. I loved the fact that it looks interesting and colorful and is actually an Eco-design piece
because it is made from recycled magazine paper.

tell the audience what movie, book, album, website, tv show, and magazine you love that most people haven't seen/read/heard?
I'm always curious to read about India, either books about the religions and culture, or books written by Indian writers. It's always so rich and colorful and interesting,
recently I've read the books by Gita Mehta 'Karma Cola' and 'A River Sutra'. Also for people who are interested in Eco Design, it's great to be on the mailing list of O2:
it's a great source of information about Sustainable design.

schooled or self taught artist?
Schooled, a greaduate of Bezalel Academy of Art and Design in Jerusalem,Israel. I've graduated in the graphic design dept. I studied for one semester at School of Visual Arts in NY and took mostly illustration classes there.

favorite place in your town?
Close to where I live there is a hill that is called Napoleon Hill (the legend says that the troops of Neopleon parked here when they arrived to the holyland.) On top of this hill there are many flowers in winter, you can even find rare ones, and also some archeological sites. This area used to be populated in the iron age! Thousands of years ago, there is even a big well there carved in the rock, it's nice to have such an ancient site in the middle of the city.

favorite place in the world?
It's India, but i havn't been there yet..
I lived in NY for a few years so i really miss the energy and the richness (in terms of art and culture) of New York. I miss it and feel it's my second home.

any advice you can pass onto aspiring artists/designers?
Follow your heart and be selective in the kinds of projects you are taking, try not to take projects that you are not going to have fun with.
